The Asheboro Library TeenZone provides a safe and welcoming environment for teens to develop a lifelong interest in and appreciation for reading and learning. The library and the TeenZone provide a variety of programs and services for teens to promote literacy, foster a love of reading and create the opportunity for lifelong learning. The Asheboro Library TeenZone supports educational, civic, cultural, and recreational activities to aid the individual’s pursuit of self-education and research, pleasure, and the creative use of leisure time, while employing the most efficient library resources available.
The TeenZone also provides a relevant collection of print and non-print materials that meet the developmental needs of the young people of Asheboro, and surrounding communities.
So you want to be a Volunteer?
What you need to know:
Volunteers are required to begin the “first steps” of the process by emailing the YA librarian and scheduling a day and time to have an initial meeting
Volunteers will then schedule a “training day” to learn how to shelve books and meet members of staff and be shown around, including the non-public spaces
Accepted reasons for volunteering include:
School clubs (DEKA, etc.)
Service hours for religious or civic organizations (confirmation, etc.)
Parental wishes
for early college requirements
Unaccepted reason
any legal ramifications (public service as a legal punishment)
Volunteers will be expected to be on time and check with the Young Adult Librarian when they’ve finished their work.
Also:
Saturday volunteers can only be scheduled for the days the Young Adult Librarian works on Saturday.
Volunteers should call or email Young Adult Librarian if unable to keep agreed dates. Emergencies occur, and will be dealt with on a case by case basis.
Volunteers who fail to show (without contacting the YA librarian) for more than two agreed dates in 30 days will lose their volunteer privileges. Volunteers who are more than 15 minutes late (except for emergencies) more than once in 30 days will lose their volunteer privileges. (Lost volunteering privileges can be regained after a second meeting to go over volunteer expectations.)
Volunteer hours can be recorded and submitted officially for specific requests. The Young Adult Librarian will email hours to teachers or club leaders or clergy for official volunteering. Tracking hours for personal use is the responsibility of the volunteer.
The library does keep track of your volunteer hours to submit to the county and state. The library does not share any personal information beyond first name, time and date of volunteering and number of hours.
A note on Safety in the Library
The library is a public building and anyone can come in to use the library appropriately. We understand that some of the people who may use the library can seem scary or make other library users uncomfortable. The staff is very concerned that all library users but especially our volunteers feel safe at all times in the public areas. If a volunteer doesn’t feel safe or if they do not feel comfortable for any reason in the public areas, it is imperative that the volunteer let the Young Adult Librarian or any staff member know immediately and that all public area work can be stopped at that time and volunteers can remove to non-public areas for the duration of their scheduled time. We want all volunteers to be and feel safe. That is our primary goal.
Report any incidents to library staff and the YA librarian immediately and move to the non-public spaces as quickly as you can.
In line with the TeenZone mission, we provide “a safe and welcoming environment for teens to develop a lifelong interest in and appreciation for reading and learning”.
