Tips To Get Your Young Child Reading

Early Literacy Begins With You.
Help your child get ready to read with simple activities every day.

You are your child's first teacher, and your home is where your child begins to learn.

For more tips and information on helping your young child begin to read, visit your Liberty Library and pick up a brochure.

Talking

  • Make sure your child has lots of opportunities to talk with you, not just listen to you talk

Singing

  • Sing the alphabet song to learn about letters.

Reading

  • Read every day.

Writing

  • Writing begins with scribbles - Encourage this by providing many opportunities to draw and write.

Playing

  • Give your child plenty of playtime. Some of the best play is where children can use their imaginations and create stories about what they're doing.

Book of the Month

"Anna’s lifeline to the real world is her window, where she sits day after day, watching her neighbours. When the Russells move in, Anna is instantly drawn to them. But one evening, a frenzied scream rips across the silence, and Anna witnesses something no one was supposed to see."

YA Pick of the Month

Jude was seven years old when her parents were murdered and she and her two sisters were stolen away to live in the treacherous High Court of Faerie. Ten years later, Jude wants nothing more than to belong there, despite her mortality. But many of the fey despise humans. Especially Prince Cardan, the youngest and wickedest son of the High King.

To win a place at the Court, she must defy him–and face the consequences.

Children's Pick of the Month

Cinnamon was a princess, a long time ago, in a small hot country, where everything was very old. Cinnamon did not talk. Mango trees, a parrot, and a beautiful room in the palace do nothing to help the teachers who try to make her to speak. Can a man-eating tiger do so, and exactly who will end up in the belly of the beast?
